The Minnetonka community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a beloved student-athlete whose life was cut tragically short just days before a major milestone.

Samuel Richard “Sammy” Schmaltz, a 17-year-old senior at Minnetonka High School, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Minnetrista on the morning of May 2, 2026—just one day before his 18th birthday. He tagically died from an apparent suicide.

Family members describe Sammy as an extraordinary young man with a bright future, known for his kindness, determination, and ability to make others feel welcome. His passing has left his family, friends, classmates, and teammates grieving deeply.

Born in St. Louis Park at Methodist Hospital, Sammy grew up closely connected to the Minnetonka area, where he built strong friendships and lasting memories. A dedicated and ambitious student, he was on track to graduate with honors this June. He challenged himself academically through numerous Advanced Placement courses and had already earned significant college credit.

Through his participation in the VANTAGE program, Sammy explored business and entrepreneurship, reflecting his curiosity and drive. He had been accepted to North Dakota State University with a partial scholarship and was also considering pursuing a law degree at the University of Minnesota. His goal was to become a lawyer, a path that matched his passion for learning and helping others.

Sammy was equally committed outside the classroom. He was a proud member of the school’s wrestling and football teams and also participated in track and trap shooting. He even gave back to the sport he loved by helping coach wrestling at Minnetonka, demonstrating leadership beyond his years.

In addition to his academics and athletics, Sammy worked at Chipotle, where his strong work ethic earned him recognition and consideration for a management role. He also volunteered with Feeding My Starving Children and at St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was confirmed, reflecting his commitment to service and faith.

Those who knew Sammy say his greatest joy came from spending time with family and friends. He had a natural gift for connecting with people, a generous spirit, and a constant smile that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He shared a particularly close bond with his grandparents, Sam and Sokhary You, who played a significant role in his upbringing.

Sammy is survived by his loving parents, Jerry and Elida Schmaltz, along with his grandparents, extended family, and countless friends who will carry his memory forward.

Services to honor and celebrate Sammy’s life will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Waconia. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, May 8, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. Additional visitation will take place Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., with a funeral service from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A procession will follow at 1:00 p.m., leading to burial at Eden Prairie Cemetery.
